In the footsteps of Jewish Brno

The end of safety

As part of the celebration of the Brno Day, then celebrated under the German name Schwedenfest, commemorating the successful repulse of the attack on the city by Swedish troops in 1645, the café was attacked on 15 August 1939 by a mob of about eight hundred Czech fascists, uniformed members of the Wehrmacht and SS, who, under the watchful eye of the German riot police, began beating the Jewish guests in the café. They chased and attacked the fleeing guests in the surrounding streets. One of the guests, Pavel Drexler, did not survive the attack.
