In the footsteps of Jewish Brno

Café as a meeting place

The famous Brno architect Ernst Wiesner created the modernist Café Esplanade on site of the former Café Habsburg. Opened in 1925, the café hosted many interwar Czech, German and Jewish intellectuals, and many Jewish associations held their lectures and meetings there. The family of the café owner Alois Strompf lived directly above the café.

The building was severely damaged during the bombing of Brno in 1944, and the entire street was eventually completely demolished during the construction of the Janáček Theatre.
