Brief bio of the witness

Eduard Holomek was born in 1922 in Kyjov, his father worked in glassworks, his mother served in the family of a Jewish butcher. He had five siblings, Terezia, Rozalia, Anna, Václav and Drahoslav.

The family lived in a settled way in their own house. In 1941, a German friend warned Eduard that the Roma would be deported and offered him the opportunity to work in Austria. For some time abroad, he managed to hide the fact that he was Roma.

He was later imprisoned in a concentration camp, from which he escaped twice. The rest of his family was murdered in the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp after deportation.

After liberation, he apprenticed and worked as a tinsmith, repaired boilers, built his own house and collected antiques. Throughout his life he was a proud Roma and supported Roma educational and social activities with all his strength.
