Brief bio of the witness

Margit Freund was born in Brno in March 1920. Her family was religious.

After the events of 1938, she became close to her brother Arnošt, who was of the opinion that only in their own state could Jews live without persecution. They both became Zionists and began to seek emigration to Palestine. They left Europe illegally. First to Bratislava on March 12, 1939, then by boat on the Danube. A total of 700 people sailed towards the Mediterranean. .

Before arriving in Palestine they were shelled by a British ship, one refugee was killed. The ship returned to Cyprus, later the refugees were helped in Greece. Finally they successfully broke the British blockade and were allowed to disembark in Haifa.

Margit studied, settled near Tel Aviv, married. Her husband was also from Czechoslovakia, he fought at Tobruk. After the end of the war, Margit and her husband settled in England.
