In the footsteps of Jewish Brno

Shared destiny

Pavel Fried, chairman of the Jewish community in Brno, reflected on the shared fate of the Romani and Jewish victims of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp by saying: "Regardless of their origin, they all died in the same gas chamber."

This is how deported Jews Willy Bock from Uherský Brod, and Jiří Forman, Toman Brod and Hana Lojínová from Prague remember the Roma victims. Their testimonies were recorded in the mid-1990s.

Why did the Jewish prisoners consider the Czech and Moravian Roma imprisoned in the next section of the camp to be their compatriots, "our people”?
