Before being transported to their deaths, the Roma from Moravia were gathered in the stables of the former Brno slaughterhouse on Masná Street. All their property was confiscated.
The first deportation train departed from Brno on 7 March 1943, and seven of the thousand deportees survived.
The memorial plaque, which was installed on the building of the concentration centre by the survivors thanks to the initiative of historian Ctibor Nečas, was permanently loaned to the Museum of Romani Culture after the demolition of the building by the City of Brno, where it has become part of the permanent exhibition in the hall dedicated to the genocide of the Roma.
If you haven't visited the Museum yet, it's definitely worth it. As well as the unique publication "...these are difficult memories", which captures, through the testimonies of individuals and rich visual material, the still little-known fate of the Roma during the occupation. Several Stolpersteins in Brno today commemorate specific Roma victims.
