In the footsteps of Jewish Brno

Prestigious address

Due to the rapidly growing Jewish population of Brno, the local Jewish community purchased a house on Koliště in 1904, which became the administrative centre of Jewish life in the city.

This house, then number 57 Koliště, housed most of the institutions necessary for the administration of the affairs of citizens professing the Jewish faith. There was a large meeting and lecture hall as well as the offices of foundations and associations. From here, Jewish foundation houses, an orphanage, an old age home, cultural events and scout camps were administered. A new synagogue was built in the courtyard of the house.

The building itself, due to its location, was an expression of equality and integration of Jewish citizens into the structures of the majority society.

How is the importance of the building for the Jewish inhabitants of Brno commemorated on the site today?
