After the invasion of the Warsaw Pact troops and the occupation of Czechoslovakia, the twenty-year-old Jan decided to emigrate. In September 1969, he arrived in Munich, where he completed his studies started in Prague. As a graduate physicist, he then joined the scientific center in Jülich, where he organized energy research. He then worked as a journalist focusing on energy for the next 30 years.
