Testimony of Ruth Kohner

Now, watch an excerpt of Ruth Kohner's testimony from the USHMM archives.

František Kohner’s legal training did not go to waste at the Ballyrolly House Farm in the village of Millisle, County Down. Only a qualified lawyer could successfully secure the necessary immigration documents, ration cards and proper procedural processes in a country where most refugees faced internment or deportation as “enemy aliens”. Each refugee had to be regularly registered with the police, was not allowed to leave their residence and had to obey a curfew.

Why did British authorities consider refugees from Nazism to be "enemy aliens"?
