The Most rabbi came from a highly respected family of Talmudic and Hasidic scholars, but he followed a more modern style than many of his relatives. He was born in Brody, in Austrian Galicia, and then worked as a rabbi in Uherský Ostroh and Šafov, from where he was called up to serve on the front as a field rabbi during the First World War.
