While Richard Weinstein survived the war in the so-called Shanghai Ghetto, established after the Japanese occupation of the city, his wife and children were deported to the Terezín ghetto and from there to Auschwitz-Birkenau. All three miraculously survived, and the family was reunited a year after the war.
