Within Judaism, there are several different communities. Sephardic Jews came from Spain, Portugal and North Africa and dispersed in different countries in the world. Ashkenazi Jews mostly migrated from the area of Eastern Europe. These two groups differ in language, culture and customs.
The Sephardim were the first to immigrate to Dubrovnik during the 15th century and they prevailed. Ashkenazis settled only later, mostly from other parts of Croatia. At the beginning of the 20th century, their number was almost equal.
