Traces of Jewish life in Dubrovnik

Kosher food

The Hebrew word "kosher" means "proper" and denotes what is permitted according to Jewish law. Kosher dietary laws are called kashrut. These laws are very strict and the Jews, at least the religious ones, strictly follow them. In a kosher type of diet, milk and dairy products must not be mixed with meat. Different communities of Jews have different rules about how much time should pass between meat and dairy meals. Even the dishes in which these meals are prepared must not be the same, nor the sink in which they are washed. Also, only the meat of certain animals may be eaten, and that animal must be slaughtered and cleaned according to regulations.

Do you think food plays a significant role within a community? Why yes or why not?
