Traces of Jewish life in Dubrovnik

Jewish fountain

It is believed that the Jewish fountain in Dubrovnik has existed since the Jewish community existed in Dubrovnik, so it was installed at the beginning of the 15th century. It was located near the southern entrance to the ghetto, next to the small Onofrio fountain. And while the small Onofrio's fountain served for drinking water only for Catholics, the Jews had a special fountain, the Jewish one. In the past, it was also called a kosher fountain, precisely because of the connection with the Jews and their diet, as well as to mark that the water from this fountain is acceptable for the Jews.

In the 19th century, the Austrian authorities decided to move the fountain to Pile, more precisely to Brsalje. It is still there today. It has been restored and changed several times, including repairs, but it still stands in the same place and provides fresh water to the citizens of Dubrovnik. And the name, the Jewish or kosher fountain, has also persisted to this day.

What do you think was the importance of this fountain for the Jewish community in the past?

What are your thoughts on the decision to relocate the fountain and remove it from the Jewish part of the city?
