Jewish Prague

After liberation

After the liberation of the country, the Jewish National House was confiscated by the state.

In the former Bet Chalutz, a youth home of the National Committee was established, offices were used by state enterprises or converted into apartments, the gym was given to the Sokol gymnastic union, a studio of the FAMU film school was established in the former cinema, and film laboratories were created in one of the basements.

The former Aschermann café became the factory canteen of the national enterprise Průmstav, later, during the normalisation period, a popular vegetarian restaurant operated there. The photograph of its tasteful interior filled with communist slogans was taken in 1981.

After many years, the building was finally returned to the Jewish community, then damaged during the floods of 2002.

Today's tenants of the Roxy club and the famous Aschermann café have brought their interiors as close to their original state as possible, citing original architectural solutions where the original furnishings were irreparably destroyed.

How is the history of the house commemorated on the site today?
