To the Czech people!

The age-old dream of the Jewish nation, which has been the most precious legacy to countless generations, hunted down and humiliated in times of terrible storms and peace, has been realized. The old homeland in Palestine is once again guaranteed to the Jewish people. Almost all the free nations of the world have solemnly recognized the Jewish people's inalienable claim to their historic homeland, Palestine. Above all, the representative of the world's greatest democracy, Wilson. Even if it did not ingest them all, the Jewish people once again have their center, their home, their refuge. A reborn Jewry once again proudly proclaims itself as an equal member of the family of nations, and reasserts its right to the free development of its life forces, denied to it for twenty long, harrowing ages.

Aware of the obligations which the world-change imposes on us for the future, we consider this moment to be an opportune moment to come forward clearly with the demands arising from the new status of the Jewish nation among the nations before the entire Czech nation, which in the same sign of national freedom and self-determination is at the same time reaching the fulfilment of its centuries-old state aspirations. We ask the Czech nation to join those who have already spoken out for our just goal in recognition of our efforts. We demand recognition of Jewish nationality as well as full equality for all Jews. We refer to the declaration of the Czech National Committee of 19 October, which solemnly promises that the Czech nation will never oppress any other nationality in the Czechoslovak state, either nationally or culturally.

We do not intend to renounce our historical and natural right under any slogan in the future, and being ready to defend the honour of the Jewish name and the safety of its bearers, we do not hesitate to declare that we honestly want to understand the obligations imposed on us by our relation as a national minority to the democratic whole in the building of new legal orders and the creation of new moral values. The abuse of Jewry for foreign interests will cease as soon as it is organized on a Jewish-national basis, as the conscious part of the Jews has always advocated before.

The National Jewish Council was established to represent these national-political interests of the Jews for the time being. Unblinded by external haste and true to our real mission, we shall continue to move towards where the eternal self-determination of the Jewish people places us, i.e. among the builders of a just community and the pioneers of true humanity.
