František Lukáš was born in 1911 in Prague. He had a passion and talent for visual arts, drawing and painting. He graduated from high school and took private drawing lessons. Before the occupation, he began to study at the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering of the Czech Technical University.
He survived the Terezin ghetto, the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp, and then the Oranienburg-Heinkelwerke, Sachsenhausen and Schwarzheide camps. After the war he worked in the theatre, but also as a scriptwriter at the Barrandov film studio. As a cinematographer he participated in the making of more than 300 short films.
