Jewish Brno outside the city walls

Testimony of Vera Zablozki

Now listen to Vera Zablozki's recollection of post-war Brno.

Vera Zablozki was born in Brno on 2 July 1934, her maiden name was Singer. Her father was a doctor, her mother had a beauty salon. Shortly after the occupation, the family fled to Slovakia, where her father was from, which at that time seemed safer than the Protectorate.

In Slovakia, my father received a temporary exemption from deportation because there was only one doctor in the vicinity of the village of Maríková. Even this did not protect the family. Vera was eventually imprisoned in the concentration camp in Sered and taken to the deportation centre in Žilina, but managed to escape during the transfer and hid with her parents under a false identity until the end of the war.

After the liberation, the family returned to Brno, they wanted to emigrate to Israel, but they did not succeed. After marrying an American citizen, Vera moved to the USA and became a renowned neurologist.

The interview was filmed on August 8, 1996 in Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.

Until what year did Vera live in Brno? Why did she move from Brno?
