Jewish Brno outside the city walls

Křenová street

Křenová Street, which you will now take to the next IWalk stop, was once home to most of the buildings serving Brno's Jewish population, including kosher bakeries, butcher shops, libraries, dining halls, and several prayer rooms.

Roughly opposite the St. Stephen's Hospital, now also demolished, there used to be an inn called Na Novém svět (On the New World), the only place where Jews in Brno were allowed to stay and eat until the end of the eighteenth century. Look for the place today marked as Křenová 28. You can see what this building looked like in the photo below.

Where the new building Křenová 22 stands today, there used to be a synagogue of pious Jews called the Polish Temple. Although the building survived the Nazi and Communist periods, it was demolished in 2006.
