Jewish Brno outside the city walls

A modern temple

The architecture of Brno's Great Synagogue was adapted for the new, less traditional generation of Jews in Austria-Hungary, born into the period of equal rights for all citizens. They wanted to eliminate differences between the religions, both by unifying the prayer space and by using the organ and choir in services.

Thus, even the Great Synagogue in Brno looked more like a Christian church than a traditional synagogue.

The more traditional members established their own prayer room on Novobranská Street.

Take a look at another photograph of Brno's Great Synagogue from the collections of the Jewish Museum in Prague, this time showing its interior. How does it differ from the interior of the church?
