As a symbol of Jewish Brno, the Great Synagogue was burned down by a mob of German and Czech fascists on the night of 16th to 17th March 1939. According to witnesses, the ruins of the building had to be cleared away by Brno Jews as part of forced labour.
Immediately after the liberation, the Brno city administration pledged to erect a memorial to Brno citizens labeled as Jews and murdered during the Shoah, on the site of the destroyed synagogue.
How is the existence of the Great Synagogue commemorated on the site today?
