Walter Süskind’s brave deeds were revealed after the war. He was eventually recognized as a war hero, and in 1972 a pretty, old bridge next to Waterlooplein (and so close to the Hollandsche Schouwburg) was named after him. The bridge received a bronze plaque with his name and the following message on it:
“Walter Süskind (Lüdenscheid, 29 October 1906 - After the evacuation of Auschwitz, January-February 1945). During the German occupation he saved many Jewish fellow citizens from deportation, at the risk of his life.”
