Listen to Eli Asser, who has been in the vicinity of the raids, and to Sieny Cohen, whose family member got deported and murdered.
Sieny Kattenburg-Cohen was born on the 19th March 1924 in Amsterdam. She lived with her parents, grandparents, brother and sister in Amsterdam’s Jewish district. They actively participated in the Jewish community. Her family regularly attended the shul (synagogue) and led a kosher household. Her father was trading in shoes. In 1943 Sieny married Harry Cohen, so that they could go into hiding together. They survived the war, hiding at a family in Nieuw-Vennep. However, Sieny lost most of her family. After the war, Sieny and Harry lived for a while in Rotterdam, and had two children: Greta and Leo. They then moved to New York, and later to Mexico, but eventually returned to the Netherlands in 1975.
