Marianna Brander was born on 14th November 1915 in Amsterdam. Her family lived in a poor Jewish neighborhood. Her father worked as a fruit vendor at the Waterlooplein market. Marianna attended a mixed school in the area. Her family wasn’t religious. Before the war broke out, Marianna had worked as a seamstress, and she had married Marcus de Hond. In 1943 Marianna was arrested and deported to Westerbork. She survived several camps and death marches. Her husband did not survive the war. After liberation, Marianna returned to Amsterdam, where she later married Salomon de Hond. They had one son.
