Jewish Resistance in Amsterdam

7/7 Reflection on Stop 3

Look at the two monuments. The monument ‘The Dockworker’ primarily symbolizes non-Jewish resistance. This monument came about at the initiative of the Municipality of Amsterdam, a few years after the war. The statue was unveiled by Queen Juliana in 1952. Since then it has been serving as the site of the yearly national February Strike commemorations.

The ‘Jewish Resistance Monument’ symbolizes Jewish resistance. This monument came about at the initiative of Jewish resistance fighters. It was erected as late as 1988 and was unveiled by the chairman of the House of Representatives. As of 2009 a number of commemorations took place at the monument, but not since 2015.

As you see, the two monuments have rather different status within the Dutch national narrative and commemoration practice.
