Jewish Resistance in Amsterdam

5/7 The Jewish fight club’s fate

The WA-member, Hendrik Koot’s death had dire consequences. The Germans decided to set a precedent. On the 22nd of February 1941, a convoy of German army trucks entered the Jewish district. The neighborhood got fenced off. During that and the following day more than 400 Jewish men between the ages of 18 and 35 got brutally rounded up. Among them were many members of the Jewish fight club. These men were then forced into the trucks, driven away, and got deported to concentration camps. Only one of them made it back alive.

In the photo you see Isaäc Brander. Isaäc Brander and his brother, Abraham - both cousins of Marianna de Hond-Brander- were amateur boxers , and joined the Jewish fight club. Both of them were arrested during the raids that took place on the 22nd & 23rd of February, as well as their cousins, Levie and Hartog Brander. They were deported to Mauthausen concentration camp, where they were murdered.
