Jewish Resistance in Amsterdam

2/7 Photo series about the raid on the Jonas Daniël Meijerplein

What you see in the photo is a convoy of SS trucks on the Jonas Daniël Meijerplein, during the raids on the 22nd & 23rd February 1941. The more than 400 Jewish men who were arrested during this raid were violently forced into the trucks, and were deported.

This photo is part of a series of 21 photos about these raids, taken by an unknown German soldier. The soldier went to a photo shop in Amsterdam to get the photos developed. Mr. H.C. Damen, who was working at the photo shop at that time, noticed the significance of the photos, and created an extra set of prints. That’s how the photos were preserved. After the Netherlands got liberated, the photos were shown at exhibitions and on TV.
