Exploring traces of Jewish Olomouc

Remembering the family

Watch clip of testimony of Alice Kraus about her native Olomouc, then answer the question.

Alice Kraus was born in the autumn of 1920 in Olomouc. Her father was arrested on the first day of the war. He died shortly after his release from prison and was buried in the Olomouc Jewish cemetery. Alice married Zdeněk Freund and moved to Prague.

Her mother Jeanette and her brother Erich, who was training to be an agricultural worker, were deported from Olomouc to the Terezín ghetto on July 4, 1942; Alice and her husband did not arrive in Terezín until the beginning of September. Erich and his mother were deported from Terezín to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp on 16 October 1944. Alice and her husband were deported twelve days later.

Alice was deported from Auschwitz-Birkenau to Ravensbrück and other camps; her husband, brother and mother did not survive.

The interview was filmed on 27 July 1997 in Stevenson, Maryland, USA.
