Exploring traces of Jewish Olomouc

Memories of Anthony Hare

Anthony Hare was born in Olomouc in November 1915 as Antonín Haas. He managed to escape from occupied Czechoslovakia, although probably by one of the most difficult routes.

He was one of the passengers on the infamous ship St. Louis, which was turned back to Europe from Cuba and the United States with almost a thousand Jewish refugees on board.

Antonín's father, Anastáz, managed to get him permission from Olomouc through now unknown contacts to land in England, where Antonín joined the Czechoslovak army. Thus he became one of the liberators of Europe.

He found no one at home, his family had been murdered. He returned to England and settled in Huddersfield near Manchester.

The interview was filmed on 28 October 1997 in London.
