Exploring traces of Jewish Olomouc

Leaving home

At the beginning of their reign of terror, the Nazis also supported the emigration of persons identified as Jews in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. On the condition, of course, that they leave all their property to the new masters of the country. It is no coincidence that even deportations to death were later passed off as "emigration". The Jewish communities set up emigration departments to help with the emigration of their members.

The opening call from the first edition of the Jewish News, the only newspaper that persons identified as Jews residing in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia were allowed to read.

"To all Jews in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia Prague, November 1939. We ask you to read these instructions with the utmost attention and to observe the directions given in them as precisely as possible. Every Jew should be fully aware of the responsibility which he has towards Jewry. The actions of any individual Jew may, under certain circumstances, bring disaster upon all Jews. Therefore, we must beware of all phenomena that bring the Jewish people into danger. This is especially true of any political or pseudo-political activity. The Jews should refrain from all contacts which could lead them into suspicion from such activities, especially from persons who incite to riots and false news, and from all "whispered propaganda" and the spreading of nonsensical ideas. All our interest and the interest of every Jewish individual must be first and foremost to emigrate and to prepare for emigration. All the means necessary for the realization of emigration should be placed in the hands of the professional Jewish institutions. ..."
