Exploring traces of Jewish Olomouc

Testimony of Gertruda Bartková

Gertruda Bartková was born in Vienna in 1927. After the so-called Anschluss of Austria (its annexation to Nazi Germany), the family moved to Olomouc.

First she was deported to Terezín, where she helped as a nurse and worked with children. From there she was deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp, where she worked in the children's block of the so-called Terezin Family Camp. Gertruda then passed through the camps Hamburg-Altona and Bergen-Belsen.

She survived, but was an orphan with no relatives. She decided to study medicine and worked as a paediatrician until her retirement.

The interview was filmed on 24 April 1996 in Uherské Hradiště.
