In the footsteps of the Jews of Győr

Testimony

Watch an excerpt from an interview with Leslie Borsa, in which he recalls his childhood memories of Győr.

Leslie Borsa was born in 1914 in Győr, Hungary, as László Brandstadter. The family hungarianized their surname to Borsa. His father taught at the Orthodox elementary school, and he lived with his three siblings and parents in poverty but in great love. He served as a soldier and then as a labour serviceman during the war. In 1944 he was deported to Buchenwald and then to Mauthausen. After the war he worked in Győr in trade, then moved to Budapest once the state had taken control of the enterprises. He left Hungary in 1956 and was 82 when he was interviewed in Toronto.
