The IWalk in Győr takes you to two parts of the city, Győrsziget and Újváros. The synagogues of the different Jewish denominations were built in these two neighbourhoods at the end of the 19th century, and some of the Jewish entrepreneurs settling in Győr also started their businesses here, thus contributing to a boost in the city’s industrial development. The Hungarian authorities designated the ghetto area in Győrsziget in 1944, where nearly 6,000 Jews from Győr and the surrounding area were rounded up before their deportation.
