In the footsteps of the Jews of Győr

About the Shelter

The Shelter was built in 1913 with donations from members of the Jewish community. The name of the building refers to its purpose. It provided space for the ritual kitchen, which catered for the poor children, and the home of the elderly. Today the building houses an exhibition of the religious and local history of the Győr community, which can be visited by appointment.

The building of the Shelter still reminds us that the Jewish community looked out for its members, and helped those who could not look after themselves. In front of the Shelter was Kossuth Lajos Streetm, which was the road coming from Vienna in 1944, bringing the German troops to invade the town, who marched in front of the Shelter and the synagogue.

How do you think the Jewish families, who had already experienced more discrimination at the time, reacted to what happened? What could they do on the night of the invasion?
