Listen to Gabriella Polgár's recollection of the day. Gabriella and her family lived in Széchenyi Square in the city centre in March 1944.
Gabriella Polgár was born in 1924 in Palestine, where her father worked at that time. The family moved back to Hungary in 1928. Gabriella was not allowed to continue her studies because of the numerus clausus, so she trained to become a hairdresser. They moved to Győr in 1939, where they lived first in Gyárváros and then in Széchenyi tér. During the ghettoisation, they had to surrender their apartment in Széchenyi Square. She was deported to Auschwitz. After the liberation she returned to Győr. Her interview was made in 2000, when she already lived in Budapest.
