Exploring the Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex

Constructing the Memorial

A final decision for the memorial's architectural design was made on June 7, 1965. The winning design was developed by architects Sashur Kalashyan and Arthur Tarkhanyan. According to the Awards Committee, the design was chosen for the uniquely tilted khachkar-like (cross stone) pillars which memorialize the victims of the Armenian Genocide and the upright obelisk which symbolizes the rebirth of a nation.

The construction of the memorial was carried out by “Yerkimshin” construction corporation, headed by Artavazd Ordukhanyan. In two and a half years, the construction was completed. An opening ceremony for the memorial took place on November 29, 1967.
