Location of the wartime Jewish Religious Community Zagreb (ŽBOZ)

On 16 May 1941, the NDH allowed the resumption of work for the one Jewish Religious Community Zagreb (ŽBOZ) instead of three different prewar city communities. Already in April 1941, the Gestapo and officers of the German security police entered the premises of the Jewish Community in Zagreb at 16 Palmotićeva Street, confiscated all property and sealed the building, and then used the building for their offices until the premises were taken over by the NDH authorities in October. At the same time the Ustasha authorities also entered the premises of several buildings in the same residential block in the center of Zagreb, where the Rabbinate, the Chevra Kadisha, and several other Jewish organizations had their offices. The Old People's Home of the Lavoslav Schwarz Foundation in 63 Maksimirska Street was also evicted. In May the Community moved its center to 4 King Tomislav Square, to the building of the former Friedfeld Jewish Foundation and to the space at 9 Trenkova Street. ŽBOZ was under the authority of the Ustaše police (later the Ministry of the Interior), the so called Jewish department, which designed and implemented the NDH's anti-Jewish policy.
