Jewish Zagreb

Zrinjevac. Topography of Jewish Zagreb

The late Monarchy is the peak of Jewish Zagreb. Jews got increasingly acculturated and present in the wider society. The Jewish community consisted of individuals of different Jewish intellectual and religious orientations, from acculturated members, bilingual or multilingual, mostly Neolog (reform Jews). Jews participated in the development of civil societies, eg. the oldest charitable society in Croatia, the Society of Humanity, in 1846. In the second half of the 19th century, many Jewish societies were founded and from the end of the century, Zionism appeared in Zagreb. Sports societies were founded, like the Makabi Sports and Gambling Society. At the eve of the Monarchy some Jewish individuals were ennobled by the monarch.

Donations were common from economically stronger members of the Jewish community. Two donations from Jewish individuals in Zagreb adorn the city park on Zrinjevac – a music pavilion, a donation from Eduard Prister, and a meteorological column, a donation from Adolf Holzer.
