Testimony of Lily Friedrich

Lily Friedrich (birth name Gelber) was born on 5 August 1928 in Saarbrucken. Her family originally came from Poland and moved to Luxembourg where her father set up a shoe business in Luxembourg City. After the Nazi occupation, she was deported to Lódz in Poland together with other family members. In the meantime, she ended up in the children's ghetto in Lodz. Then she was transported with her mother to Auschwitz in 1944. She survived the war hidden in the trenches for a couple of days and was liberated by Soviet soldiers. After the war, she and her mother decided to return to Luxembourg, then she traveled to the USA in April 1946. She found a job in a factory (sewing) in New York, then she took a sales job. She got married to Eli in 1952 and had a daughter Sharon and two grandchildren.
