Jewish religious and school life before the war

Watch the testimony of Sonya Hartog who speaks about the Jewish religious observance before the war.

Sonya Hartog (née Salomon) was born on 6 August 1928 in Dudelange, Luxembourg. Her father used to have his own business which was confiscated by Nazis after the invasion in 1940. The family decided to flee to Spain through France. The family stayed in Spain for a couple of months and then moved to the United States to Columbus in Georgia. Sonya attended a regular school and once she finished the sixth grade, her family moved to Chicago where Sonya graduated from the High Park High School in 1946. She also got her first job as a salesgirl at a dime store. Her family decided to go back to Luxembourg and she followed them with some hesitation. Once her family fully reintegrated into the Luxembourgish (Jewish) society again, she refused to stay in Luxembourg and went back to the USA where she finished her education and got married to Ernest Hartog and had two sons Lloyd and Marc. The interview was conducted in New York in 1995.
