The Second World had a devastating impact on the Jewish community of Luxembourg. Most of Jews who were deported to concentration camps did not survive the horrors of the war, and only a handful managed to return and restore their lives in Luxembourg. Many Jews, especially young ones, refused to permanently return to Luxembourg without sufficient future prospects. Some young Jews only temporarily returned with their parents to assist them in rebuilding their destroyed houses, shops and factories. However, A large number of young Jews wanted to achieve higher education at respected international universities to make a better starting position for their future lives. The establishment of Israel was a great motivation for Luxembourg Jews as well. Some therefore decided to emigrate to the “promised” lands, others returned to those countries where they survived the war in exile.
