Avenue de la Liberté: The German occupation

This is one of the main streets in Luxembourg City used by the Nazis marching through the city in May 1940 to symbolically demonstrate their power. Due to “Germanisation” of city streets, the Avenue de la Liberté was renamed Adolf Hitler Strasse. At the beginning of the 20th century, the avenue was pierced as an extension of the new bridge over the river Pétrusse. The facades of the houses are designed in the French style to recall the atmosphere of the main Parisian arteries. The avenue is largely lined with hotels, cafes and luxurious restaurants with open terraces.
