In the footsteps of Pilsen Jews

Garden of Memories in the Former Auxiliary Synagogue

The Auxiliary Synagogue was built next to the Old Synagogue in 1875, at a time when the Great Synagogue did not yet exist and the number of believers far exceeded the capacity of the Old Synagogue. Both synagogues used to be connected on the first floor by a unique access balcony. The Auxiliary Synagogue also briefly served as a Jewish school. Today's condition of the place is also a reminder of what happened to Jewish monuments in the post-war period.

After the war, both synagogues were used by state-owned enterprises which regularly attempted to expropriate them. Thus began the gradual devastation of the whole site. In 1997, even the roof of the Auxiliary Synagogue collapsed.

Only the Garden of Memories project led to the cleaning of the complex, the restoration of what could be restored, and the restoration of the dignity to a place so important for the history of the Jewish presence in Pilsen.
