About the Interviewees

David Shentow was born on April 29, 1925, in Warsaw, Poland but lived in Antwerp, Belgium. In 1942, he was sent to a work camp in France with his father until he was transported to Auschwitz. In 1943, he was sent to Warsaw to clean up the burned-down ghetto and then to the Landsberg concentration camp. He was liberated in April 1945 by American soldiers. In 1949, he immigrated to Canada to live with his uncle. David married his wife, Roz and they had two daughters. David was interviewed by the USC Shoah Foundation on August 24, 1995, in Ottawa, Ontario.

Adela Grinbaum was born on April 30, 1923 in Warsaw, Poland. Under Nazi occupation, she lived in the Warsaw Ghetto with her family. In 1942, Adela survived a massacre by Nazi soldiers in the house she lived in. She was sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau and was forced to spread ashes from those who were sent to the crematorium. She was then taken to the Malchow concentration camp. She was liberated by the International Red Cross in 1945. In 1966, she moved to Canada with her husband and daughters. Adela was interviewed by the USC Shoah Foundation on January 6, 1995 in Thornhill, Ontario.

Ernest (Ernie) Weiss was born in Mad, Hungary in 1928 to an Orthodox Jewish family. He was the eldest of 7 children. In the spring of 1944, the Jewish community of Mad was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau where his grandparents, parents, 5 brothers and sisters and most of the Jewish community from Mad were murdered. Ernie survived Auschwitz, many other concentration camps and a death march, and was liberated by the Red Army on May 8, 1945. He was admitted to the United States as an orphan in 1947 and moved to Canada in 1952 where he had 4 daughters and many grandchildren and was a regular speaker at schools across Ontario. Ernest was interviewed by the USC Shoah Foundation on April 9, 1996 in Downsview, Ontario.
