The Monument is comprised of six triangular formations configured to create the points of a star, similar to the Star of David. The triangular spaces within the Monument represent the triangular badges used by the Nazis to label homosexuals, Roma-Sinti, Jehovah’s Witnesses as well as political and religious prisoners for persecution.
Star of David
In the 19th century, the Star of David was widely adopted by Jewish communities of Eastern Europe to represent Jewish identity. It was chosen as the central symbol for the Jewish national flag at the First Zionist Congress in 1897. It is now the central symbol of Jewish identity and the flag of Israel. During the Holocaust, the Star was misappropriated by the Nazis and their collaborators to identify Jews, dehumanize them and mark them for extermination.
Why do you think the symbol of the Star of David and the triangular spaces were chosen for the design of the Monument?
