The Meteorological Column/Weather Station

The Meteorological Column was the donation by dr. Adolf Holzer to the City of Zagreb, and was built in 1884, at the northern part of the Zrinjevac Park. It was designed by Herman Bollé, and built of Istrian marble. The clock was made by a watchmaker from Zagreb, Wilhelm König, and the meteorological instruments were procured from Göttingen.

Adolf Holzer (Svätý Jur, Slovakia, 1834 – Zagreb, 1885) was a military doctor „royal land medical advisor and the knight of the order of Franz Joseph I.“ He was also an amateur meteorologist. From Hungary (modern Slovakia) he moved to Daruvar and Lipik into the service of the count Julije Janković. After the service he went to Czechia, but remained closely attached to Croatia, and decided to donate a part of his wealth the capital city of Croatia.
