Relja Bašić was born in a Jewish family. His father died young, and he took his step-father's name. Both of his parents were musicians, and he grew up surrounded by music. His mother, Elly Bašić, was a music pedagogue who ran a famous music school in Zagreb. He went to an Evangelical school and had a bilingual Croatia-German schooling. During the war, he moved with his mother to different addresses in Zagreb, always connected to the spaces where his mother had her music school. Later, Relja Bašić graduated from the Academy of Drama in Zagreb, and became a famous Croatian film, theater and television actor. He died in Zagreb in 2017.
