Throughout its history Zagreb had only one large, monumental synagogue. Built in 1867, it was the tallest and one of the most beutiful buildings in the Downtown. Also, its interior was impressive and richly decorated. Following the decision of the NDH authorities, the demolition of the synanogue began at the end of 1941 and ended in 1942. After the Second World War the synagogue was not rebuilt, and the land on which it stood was nationalized. At the beginning of the 1990s, the land was returned to the Jewish Community.
