Holocaust in Zagreb

Lea Deutsch

Lea Deutsch was a star, a theater actress before WWII. Today, she is a symbol of suffering of Jewish children in Zagreb, Croatia, similarly to Anna Frank. She was only five when she started performing in the Croatian National Theater, and is considered to be the youngest actress of that theater in history. She performed in musicals, dance performances and comedies. Besides, she was a very talented actress, and acted in numerous plays. A renowned director and writer Tito Strozzi wrote an operetta „Child prodigy“ for her, in which Lea had the main role. Many foreign theatres wanted her, but Lea refused to leave Zagreb, and continued to perform in the Croatian National Theater.

When you reach the entrance to the building, look at the pavement. There you will see a gold tile depicted in the picture.

As you continue this walk around the city, pay attention to other stumbling stones, take a note of where they are, and who they are dedicated to.

  • Have you already seen such tiles around the city? Do you know what we commemorate with them? Explain briefly.
  • What have you learned from this stone about Lea Deutsch?
