Who was Endre Ságvári?

Endre Ságvári (1913-1944) worked as a lawyer and during the Horthy era he was a member of the then illegal communist movement. After the war, due to his anti-fascist activity and his martyrdom he grew into a cultic person celebrated by the state. After the fall of communism his positive image became disputed. His public statues and memorial plaques were removed, and the public spaces and institutions that had been named after him were renamed.

His bust was made by György Baksa Soós in 1949, it was erected at the courtyard of the Main City Council (today’s City Hall) in Budapest. At the unveiling ceremony Kálmán Pongrácz, Budapest Mayor at the time said:

“Now, as we unveil this memorial statue, we swear that we will grab the weapon fallen from the hand of this great martyr of the freedom movement, and following his example we will guard our people’s freedom and fight for the freedom of every worker!”
